Help Out Flood Victims by looking after a Pet (or two)

January 11th, 2011

With the impact on the QLD Floods spreading rapidly to Brisbane, Ipswich and other areas of South East Queensland – and with no end in sight, more and more Queenslanders are finding themselves directly affected by the floods.

But it’s not only the people who are suffering, many cats, dogs and other pets are also being caught up in the disaster.  Unfortunately, during evacuation, it is not always possible for people to take their pets with them, and even if they can, looking after a pet away from home under trying circumstances is very difficult.

Even once people can return to their homes, there is often lots of cleaning and mopping up to do – not a great environment to have a scared pet underfoot.

People affected by the floods already have more than enough on their minds, and worrying about their pets is simply adding to the stress.  The QLD RSPCA is doing a wonderful job trying to help wherever they can, but with so many people and pets affected by floods, there is only so much they can do.

If you are a pet lover, living in or near a flood affected community, and have a bit of extra capacity to help out by looking after someone else’s pet, you might like to consider creating a listing on HelpOut – specifying where you live and what type of pet/s you are able to look after.  It does not have to be for long – maybe just a few days or weeks, but in this simple way you could make a big difference to the health and wellbeing of both the pet and the owner.

See : http://helpout.spaceout.com.au for more information about how you can volunteer to look after a flood victims pet.

I am at Cleveland and have a good safe backyard. Have walking tracks and dog park nearby. We could foster a small to medium dog in a very caring home. We own a kelpie so the dog would have company.

Hi We live in Twin Waters ( Maroochydore) and thankfully were not affected greatly by this tragedy. We are dog lovers and have a beautiful and very loved Australian Cattle Dog – Banjo that loves other dogs and would welcome a friend and mate for as long as it takes for you to get back on your feet. We are willing to care for your dog as if it were our own. There are lots of walks and beach runs and a whole heap of love to be given – big or small dogs all ok as the yard is completely fenced and we accept dogs inside.

If there are any dogs out there that have lost their “best friend” we would also look at adopting.

If we can help please email pmearnshaw@iprimus.com.au

Hi. My partner & I live in Bracken Ridge (north side). We have a fully fenced garden with covered patio area. Happy to foster whatever pets need helping – dogs, cats, birds, rats, rabbits etc. We have 2 cats of our own who won’t be happy about it but will get over it 😉 They can live in our bedroom for the time being if necessary!

My partner works from home so there is someone around most of the time. I have worked for cat rescue in the UK for many years & am used to fostering. Also happy to drive down to collect. x

We also have a female desexed ragdoll who is an inside only cat. The animals will have to be fine with children also. We have high fences so jumpers will be safe. We have the time, space, and love of animals, particularly dogs. Large secure yard and we’re willing to help with 1 or 2 dogs. We live close to Brisbane but could travel to collect any dogs. We are not fussy, but because we live next door to a yappy little terrier-bitzer we think a medium dog may not form a duet and drive us all crazy (lol). We also love our local wildlife so a docile/ less threatening dog would please our bush turkey’s, possums, etc who visit us regularly.

LIVE IN BANYO – NORTHSIDE OF BRISBANE – CAN TAKE ONE SMALL OR ELDERLY DOG AND/OR BIRDS AND FISH

Hi, I’m living with my husband in a residential property in Banyo, near Nudgee, and are happy to look after ONE DOG. Due to our fence being only small we’d prefer a SMALL DOG or an ELDERLY DOG. We are currently adopting a desexed 10 year old easy-going female staffy.

We are close to a large dog park and dog beach – nudgee beach.
We would love to help out in a practical way and would be happy to temporarily provide care to a family pet while you’re getting back on your feet.

CAN OFFER TO PICK UP YOUR DOGGY!!

We can give love in abundance and have a particular understanding for the more mature/geriatric canines!!

Also willing to take BIRDS, including CHICKENS and FISH – just ask!!

    Hope we can help

Hi we have a fully fenced yard at Wynnum West and are happy to help out with fostering a dog for anyone affected by the floods. We can provide a loving home for as long as required. We lost our 13 year old Kelpie cross last year so a temporary 4 legged visitor would be welcome. We would prefer a medium to large dog as our rought iron gates may allow tiny breeds to escape. We can pick up if required. Call Jodi on 0438 634588

We live in a house with a secure back yard. We can look after another keeshnd, but keeshonden can frighten other dogs due to their appearance.

I live 10mins NW of the Brisbane CBD on a double, fully fenced, pet-friendly block with my well socialised pooch, Murray. We’d be delighted to take in as many animals as possible that need a loving home for however long it takes for their owners to get back on their feet.

I am an EXPERIENCED ANIMAL CARER (owner of full-time petcare business for the past 11 years) and also have some experience in wildlife care. I can even look after any animal that needs special care (insulin dependent etc).

Indoor, house trained animals would be preferable (as I live in a rental with carpet) but I also have some capacity for an outdoor animal or two.

Please call me on 0414 747 769 if you think I can help.
